California's Gold Wines

California's Gold Wines is a "Gold Mine" of information. Gold Wine(s) have won Gold Medal(s)at one or more annual wine competitions. Gold Wine is the best of its varietal type. Any Gold Wine is worth a try. A Gold Wine that has won in multiple competitions is even more "Golden".

The listings in these pages are specially organized for you to print and use in your favorite wine stores and restaurants to quickly identify a specific wine's awards. A two-year window, spanning 1998-1999 is provided since wines tend to take about two years to clear the retailer stocks.

So don't waste time. Print these pages and rush to your favorite wine store. Gold Wine tends to disappear rather quickly.

The current listings include over 500 different gold medal wines from more than 250 different wineries.

These pages will be updated frequently as each competition is completed so that you will have the latest information to use in your buying decisions.

Initially, we offer information on six popular varietals, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. As the site develops, we will add others.

As of March, 2001, the following competitions are included:

AM8 - 1998 Amador County Fair
CS8 - 1998 California State Fair
IN9- 1999 Indiana State Fair INDY International Wine Competition
LA8- 1998 Los Angeles County Fair
LA9- 1999 Los Angeles County Fair
LA0- 2000 Los Angeles County Fair
OC8 - 1998 Orange County (CA) Fair
OC9 - 1999 Orange County (CA) Fair
NW9 - 1999 New World International Wine Competition
RI8 - 1998 Riverside International Wine Competition

SF8 - 1998 San Francisco Fair International Wine Competition
SF9 - 1999 San Francisco Fair International Wine Competition
SH8 - 1998 Sonoma County Harvest Fair

The identifying codes (NW9, SF9, etc.) above will appear with each wine listing to indicate in which events Gold Medals were won. Special awards follow the Gold Medal awards. For example, on the Cabernet Sauvignon page, the following listing

GREENWOOD RIDGE 96 Mendocino Ridge, Estate Bottled --LA9,OC9 --

means that the 1996 Greenwood Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon with the words "Mendocino Ridge" and "Estate Bottled" on the label was awarded gold medals at the 1999 Los Angeles County Fair --LA9--, and the 1999 Orange County Fair --OC9-- Special awards, such as Best of Show, etc. are listed as applicable.

The wines are listed as they appear in the official competition results publications. Wineries are encouraged to submit additions or corrections to the E-Mail address below.

For simplicity, the words "Wine", "Wines", "Winery" "Vineyard(s)" and "Cellars" are removed from the winery name unless absolutely necessary to prevent confusion. Winery names that are person names are listed by the last name. "NV" means Non-Vintage.
